That evening, after my leg was all bandaged up, I found myself in the dining room, sitting on my normal pillow seat. Maryam, now feeling better, was admiring my impromptu headscarf and wanting to know all the details of what had happened when I’d chased Driss through the streets.

“If you don’t mind me saying, it’s terribly romantic what you and Titus did. Risking your lives for one another.” Maryam smiled and I tried not to assign too much emotion to the ordeal. It didn’t feel so romantic as my shin continued to ache, and I wasn’t so sure Titus saw anything romantic in it. We were merely protecting each other. I assumed any other acolyte would have done the same. That said, the almost kiss made me wonder where Titus’s feelings stood. I gently touched the protective snake ring Titus had given me months ago, which I’d kept hidden the entire time here.

“You know my husband was like that during our few years of marriage.”

“What? Romantic or risking his life for you?”

“Mostly romantic. But sometimes risking his life. At least what I saw as risking his life. He was a very thoughtful man, you know? Often he would bring me small trinkets or a flower to brighten my day. He knew how much I loved the written word and would sometime go out of his way to find scrolls and texts he knew I’d enjoy. Being a merchant like our father, he traveled to many different places.”

“Do you still miss him?”

“Every single day. There is a reason I never took another husband, aside from the practical advantages that come from being a wealthy widow. I don’t think any man could be as wonderful as my husband was.”

“That’s really sweet. I hope I find someone like that one day, especially someone understands the work I do for Clio.”

Fatima choked on her food briefly and cleared her throat. “Why don’t you think Titus would be that person?”

“I mean, I suppose he could. But I wonder if we’ll ever be lovers again. Not just friends and fellow acolytes. I know I still have to regain his trust, even if he knows now I was never one of Fortuna’s devotees.”

“Saving his life today has probably gone a long way toward regaining that trust.”

“It has, but—”

The front door opened and shut loudly and all our attention was focused on the person who’d just entered.

Titus pulled his hood down with one hand while holding something in his other hand. “Today’s been exhausting.”

“Come and sit, nephew. The evening meal is just starting.” Fatima waved him over and he sat down across from me.

He quickly began filling his plate. After giving him a few minutes to eat, Fatima asked, “What did you bring with you?”

He handed me the cloth. “Your headscarf. The one Driss so rudely pulled off when I knocked him out.”

“Thank you.” I tucked it tightly in my lap, surprised it had still been there after the fight.

“When I returned, Driss and his friends had been tied up by some of the guards nearby.
